Iron pipe is a pipe or conduit used as a pressure pipe for the transmission of water, gas, or sewage or as a water drainage pipe. This pipe is often also called the black pipe.
Galvanized pipe is steel pipe that has been dipped in a protective layer of zinc to prevent corrosion and rust. Galvanized pipes are generally installed in people's homes. When invented, galvanized pipe was an alternative to lead pipe for water supply lines. Today, however, we have learned that decades of exposure to water will cause galvanized pipes to corrode and rust on the inside.
Iron pipe proved to be a useful material for the manufacture of water pipes and was used as a replacement for the original elm pipe that was used previously. These water pipes consist of individual cast pipe sections, often called rods, joined together by various connection mechanisms. Flanged joints consist of a flat machined surface bolted together with gaskets between them to prevent leakage. This type of pipe connection is still used today, usually for above ground pipelines in water treatment plants and factories.
