Gypsum is one of the most widely used building materials for ceilings, roofs and partition walls. Gypsum or Drywall, also known as wallboard or Sheetrock, is a layer of gypsum sandwiched between two sheets of thick paper. Gypsum ceiling tiles are smaller in size and are used in suspended ceilings, also known as suspended ceilings.

Drywall generally comes in 4 ft x 8 ft sheets. There are other sizes too, such as 4 ft x 12 ft or even 16 ft. Also, drywall comes in a variety of thicknesses, from 1/4 inch to 5/8 inch. Because gypsum is non-flammable, some local building codes stipulate that 5/8-inch drywall will be used in garages and over stoves to provide extra fire protection.
